AP - NO DEAL: House Republicans were unable to pass a bill that would raise the nation’s debt limit before the market closed Friday. Investors are now hoping that Congress and the White House will reach a compromise over the weekend to avert a default on U.S. government debt.

AP - Stocks continued a weeklong slide after a dismal report on economic growth added to growing concerns that the federal government may default on its bond payments. Major indexes erased some of their early losses on Friday after President Barack Obama said there were many paths to a compromise on raising the debt limit.
